I visited famous Mont Saint Michel in the second half of November as a part of a short visit to Bretagne and Normandie. Whereas most tourist guides advice to come here in the summer months since the weather can be whimsical (think cold, rainy and windy) in western and northern parts of France, arriving here outside of the season definitely has its advantages: less tourists, feeling that you have the island just for yourself and a very special, somewhat mysterious aura of old monastery enhanced probably by fog and whistle of wind running through narrow cobbled streets of the village surrounding the abbey situated just on the top of the mountain.

Pod koniec listopada wybrałam się na weekend do francuskiej Bretanii i Normandii. Podczas kilkuletniego pobytu we Francji, nie miałam okazji odwiedzić słynnej Mont Saint Michel (góra świętego Michała), i dopiero teraz udało mi się spędzić w tym niezwykłym miejscu jeden dzień. Większość przewodników poleca udać się do Mont Saint Michel w miesiącach letnich, pogoda w północno-zachodniej Francji jest wyjątkowo kapryśna (niezbyt ciepło, dużo opadów deszczu i silny, zimny wiatr). Jednakże, wizyta poza sezonem turystycznym ma też swoje zalety; dużo mniej zwiedzających oraz wrażenie, że ma się wyspę tylko dla siebie. Można tutaj poczuć tajemniczą atmosferę starego klasztoru, a mgliste krajobrazy i wiatr hulający po kamiennych średniowiecznych uliczkach tworzą niesamowity bajkowy klimat.

Mont Saint Michel and its Bay with its stunning natural surroundings and exceptional architectural construction, is the first side in France classified as World Heritage UNESCO in 1979. The monastery and the attached village are on the island which is partially separated from land during high tide. Due to the significant tidal movements in this region (over 10 meters) a large part of the bay is uncovered at low tide. This unusual location of the monastery made it a defensive fortress in the history, the side was also an important centre for spirituality, in 1998 it was announced as a ‘pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in France’.

Mont Saint Michel is one of the most visited destinations in France,  there is plenty of organised one day trips from Paris (you can also rent a car, it’s approximately 4-5 hours drive) or more conveniently, come for 2 days to Bretagne and visit Rennes or Saint Malo. From each of the cities you can reach the monastery by bus or by car (only one hour drive).

Mont Saint Michel i otaczająca ją zatoka tworzą  zespół o unikalnych walorach  przyrodniczo-architektonicznych, jest to pierwszy obiekt we Francji, który został wpisany na listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO (w 1979 roku). Klasztor i znajdująca się poniżej wioska są położone na wyspie, która jest odseparowana częściowo od lądu podczas przypływu morskiego. Różnica poziomów wody podczas przypływu i odpływu może sięgnąć nawet 10 metrów w tym regionie, powodując, że opactwo jest całkowicie odsłonięte podczas odpływu. To niezwykle położenie klasztoru przyczyniło się do tego, że nie było ono wyłącznie miejscem kultu religijnego, ale pełniło także funkcje obronne. W 1998 roku zostało ono ogłoszone francuską drogą Santiago de Compostela.

Mont Saint Michel jest jedną z najczęściej odwiedzanych atrakcji turystycznych we Francji. Klasztor można odwiedzić wraz ze zorganizowaną wycieczka (wyjazd i powrót do Paryża), samochodem (około 4-5 godzin jazdy) lub zatrzymać się na noc w Rennes lub Saint Malo (łatwo dostać się tam pociągiem TGV z Paryża), a następnie dojechać do opactwa lokalnym autobusem (około godzina jazdy).

• A bit of history 

The long history of Mont Saint Michel goes back to 708 when bishop of Avaranches has a sanctuary built on Mont-Tombe in honour of Archangel. The mount soon became a major pilgrimage destination. In the 10^th century, the Benedictines settled in the abbey, while a village grew up below its walls. By the 14^th century it extended as far as the foot of the rock. An impregnable stronghold during the Hundred Years War, Mont Saint Michel is also an example of military architecture. Its ramparts and fortifications resisted all the English assaults and as a result the Mount became a symbol of national identity.

Długa historia Mont Saint Michel sięga 708 roku, kiedy biskup z Avaranches wybudował klasztor na górze Tombe na cześć archanioła Michała. Góra szybko stała się miejscem kultu i celem wielu pielgrzymek. W X wieku, Benedyktyni założyli tutaj opactwo, poniżej znajdowała się niewielka wioska. W XIV wieku, zabudowania sięgały podnóża skały. Mont Saint Michel jest świetnym przykładem zabudowań o charakterze militarnym, w minionych wiekach klasztor był niezdobytą twierdzą, zwłaszcza podczas wojen z Anglikami i do dziś jest ważnym symbolem Francji.

Following the dissolution of the religious community during the Revolution and until 1863, the abbey was used as a prison. Classified as historic monument in 1874, it underwent major restoration work. Since then, work has gone on regularly all over the site. The result is that visitors can now experience the splendour of the abbey that the people of Middle Ages regarded as representation of the heavenly Jerusalem on earth, the image of paradise.

Od czasów rewolucji aż do roku 1863, klasztor pełnił rolę więzienia. W 1874 roku został sklasyfikowany jako zabytek i został poddany gruntownej renowacji. Od tego czasu, jest on pod ciągłą kontrolą konserwatorów zabytków, dzięki czemu możemy podziwiać tę niezwykłą konstrukcję architektoniczną, którą już w średniowieczu nazywano ziemskim odzwierciedleniem raju.

• The abbey

The abbey of Mont Saint Michel is a unique building: its plan is unlike any other monastery. Constrained by the pyramidal shape of the mountain, its medieval builders wrapped the buildings around granite rock. The abbey church situated at the top, stands on crypts that create a platform designed to take the weight of the church 80 meters long.

Opactwo Mont Saint Michel jest wyjątkową konstrukcją, bez wątpienia nigdzie nie znajdziemy podobnego klasztoru, zarówno w Europie jak i na całym świecie. Wybudowane na wierzchołku góry wraz z otaczającą wioską, jest niejako wtopione w granitową skałę. Na samym szczycie góry znajduje się kościół, wzniesiony na kryptach podpierających masywny budynek kościoła.

The building known as Merveille, often regarded as the jewel of the abbey’s architecture, is evidence of the architectural mastery of its 13^th century builders who succeeded in perching two blocks of 3-storey buildings on a steep rocky slope. This required very precise technical calculations.

Centralna część klasztoru, Merveille, jest absolutną perłą architektury i dowodem ogromnego kunsztu XIII wiecznych budowniczych, którzy zdołali wznieść dwa kamienne bloki trzypiętrowych budynków na stromych zboczach góry. Taka operacja wymagała dokonania wielu precyzyjnych obliczeń matematycznych, pomysłowości i biegłości w kwestiach technicznych.

The layout and architecture of the buildings is influenced by the guiding principles of monastic life. The rule of Saint Benedict, observed by the monks inhabiting the mountain, dictated that their days be devoted to prayer and work, so the rooms were organised around those two activities and the space was reserved exclusively for the monks to respect the principles of an enclosed order.

Wygląd i funkcjonalność budynków została zdeterminowana przez reguły klasztornego życia. Mnisi zamieszkujący Mont Saint Michel żyli według zasad świętego Benedykta, głównie poświęcając swój czas modlitwie i pracy. Większość pomieszczeń została dostosowana do codziennej aktywności zamkniętej społeczności klasztornej.

Overall, the construction of the abbey was conformed to two major imperatives–the requirements of monastic life and the constraints of topography.

Podsumowując, na niezwykłą konstrukcję opactwa decydujący wpływ miały jego funkcja klasztorna oraz nietypowe położenie.

Nowadays, the abbey is transformed into museum. The opening hours differ depending on season. Currently the entrance fee is 11 euro, free for EU residents below 26 years old.

Obecnie w opactwie znajduje się muzeum. Godziny otwarcia różnią się w zależności od sezonu. Opłata za wejście wynosi 11 euro, wstęp jest darmowy dla rezydentów UE poniżej 26 roku życia.

• The village

The village of Mont Saint Michel is full of charming small cobbled streets with a medieval vibe. Most of attractions are concentrated around Grand Rue were most shops, restaurants and bars are located. Don’t skip the parish church of Saint-Pierre, surrounded by a small cemetery and where a silver statue dedicated to Saint–Michel is located. 

Wioska u podnóży Mont Saint Michel jest pełna małych urokliwych brukowanych uliczek, a spacer dookoła opactwa pozwala poczuć atmosferę średniowiecza. Większość sklepów, restauracji i kafejek zlokalizowane są wzdłuż ulicy Grand Rue. Szwędając się po zaułkach wioski, zajrzyj do kościoła Saint Pierre otoczonego przez niewielki cmentarz, znajdziesz tam również figurkę św. Michała.

Small narrow streets leading up from Grand Rue take you to many small hotels located on the hills. A little bit above the hotels there are small terraces where you can enjoy the view and sit on the bench and have your picnic.

Małe wąskie uliczki odchodzące z Grand Rue prowadzą także do urokliwych hotelików położonych na zboczach góry. Odrobinę powyżej strefy hoteli znajdują się niewielkie tarasy widokowe, gdzie można podziwiać zatokę i urządzić niewielki piknik.

Many small paths (on the right side of Grand Rue when climbing up) lead to the old walls which once protected the island, nowadays you can have a stroll along the walls and enjoy spectacular views at the bay and observe amazing game of light and changing colours of the sky–very dynamic effect of sun getting through clouds which is somewhat unique phenomenon for Bretagne and Normandy regions. There are few places where you can stand and enjoy your food, however be aware of seagulls–they can steal your sandwich and even scratch you.

Wiele uliczek (po prawej stronie Grand Rue, idąc w górę) prowadzi na stare obronne mury wyspy, obecnie są one udostępnione dla zwiedzających. Podczas spaceru wzdłuż muru można podziwiać zatokę, szybko zmieniająca się pogoda sprawia, że ten sam krajobraz wygląda zupełnie inaczej w zależności od światła, zachmurzenia, pojawiających i znikających deszczu i mgły–jest to wyjątkowy spektakl natury, tak bardzo charakterystyczny dla Bretanii i Normandii. Mury obronne Mont Saint Michel to także przyjemne miejsce na piknik, uważaj jednak na mewy i alki, potrafią wyrwać jedzenie z ręki, i niechcący podrapać.

I won’t recommend any restaurants here, however the famous one is L’Auberge de La Mère Poulard, known for its omelettes. The founder, Annette Poulard, fulfilled her dream of opening her inn, La Mère Poulard, at Mont-Saint-Michel in 1888. This very historic restaurant is included in Michelin Guide and hosted many respected and famous guests such as Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Woody Allen, Margaret Thatcher, François Mitterand and many others were dining there.

Nie chcę zbytnio polecać restauracji na wyspie, nietrudno też się domyślić, że ceny są wyższe niż w okolicy. Chciałabym jednak wspomnieć tutaj kultową restaurację L’Auberge de La Mère Poulard, znaną ze swoich wyśmienitych omletów. Annette Poulard (bardziej znana jako La Mère Poulard)  otworzyła tę restaurację w 1888 roku. Miejsce to jest częścią historii Mont Saint Michel, znajduje się w przewodniku Michelina i gościło wiele znanych osobistości takich jak Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Woody Allen, Margaret Thatcher, François Mitterand.

Another interesting restaurant is Le Pré Salé. I didn’t visit it but the name suggests they may serve salt-meadow lamb (agneau de pré-salé) which is  a type of lamb which was raised in salt marsh meadows of Mont Saint Michel bay covered. The animals eat sea herbs and plants on a daily basis which causes the meat to have a distinct taste that is considered a delicacy. The salt-meadow lamb is registered as an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC).

Kolejnym interesującym miejscem jest restauracja Le Pré Salé. Nie zdecydowałam się tutaj na posiłek, ale nazwa wskazuje, że może być tutaj serwowana solna jagnięcina (agneau de pré-salé). Jest to mięso pochodzące z owiec, które są wypasane na bagiennych łąkach pokrywających zatokę Mont Saint Michel. Dieta jagniąt składa się z morskich traw i roślin, co przekłada się później na wyjątkowy smak mięsa. Jagnięcina pré-salé jest uważana za lokalny przysmak i posiada status Chronionej Nazwy Pochodzenia (jak nasz oscypek).

You will find in the village many other small restaurants and bistros, so if you are not planning to visit Bretagne and Normandy, it is nice opportunity to try local cuisine. Bretagne is famous of its salty pancakes (galettes), if you visit in autumn you can have a galette with scallops (cuquilles Saint-Jacques)–local delicacy. In the region you will also find a great variety of very thin sweet pancakes (crêpes), try the ones with salty butter and caramel (crêpes bretonnes au caramel beurre salé). For a some taste of Normandy, you can order Crêpes Normande which can best be described as apple pie inside a crêpe. From July to January, there is a season for mussels (moules) and you will be surprised in how many delicious ways they can be prepared in France. Bretagne and Normandy are regions known from growing delicious apples and produce French best cider, so make sure you will have a glass or two. In many shops on Grand Rue you will find famous Normandy butter biscuits to take home with you.

Oprócz wspomnianych miejsc, w wiosce Mont Saint Michel znajduje się całkiem sporo restauracji i bistro. Jeżeli nie planujesz wycieczki do innych miejsc w Normandii i Bretanii, jest to dobre miejsce do spróbowania lokalnego jedzenia. Bretania jest znana ze swoich naleśników, na słono (galettes) i słodko (crêpes). Jesień to sezon na przegrzebki (cuquilles Saint-Jacques), warto więc spróbować galettes właśnie z tym przysmakiem. W słodkiej wersji popularne są naleśniki ze słonym karmelem (crêpes bretonnes au caramel beurre salé), w Normandii serwuje się je także z musem jabłkowym. Od lipca do stycznia trwa także sezon na mule (moules), w Bretanii i Normandii podaje się je na wiele sposobów (farsz i dodatki), wszystkie wersje są warte grzechu. Bretania i Normandia słyną również z produkcji cydru, warto spróbować (idealnie pasuje do muli) i zabrać ze sobą butelkę (lub dwie). Wiele sklepów z pamiątkami sprzedaje normandzkie maślane ciasteczka, dobry prezent dla smakosza słodyczy.

If you are shortly in France, Mont Saint Michel souvenir shops are good places to make a purchase of authentic French products. Small boutiques sell French renown clothing brands like Saint James, Armor Lux or Le Slip Français. You will also find small shops with local handcrafts and Normandy’s sweets and treats. Surprisingly, I didn’t find the prices very elevated (the same as in online stores). In my opinion, it is easier to buy authentic French souvenir in Mont Saint Michel small boutiques than in touristy spots in Paris.

Jeżeli nie planujesz długiego pobytu we Francji, Mont Saint Michel jest dobrym miejscem na zakup pamiątek, w sklepikach można znaleźć wiele produktów made in France, autentycznych i dobrej jakości. Niewielkie butiki oferują produkty znanych i szanowanych francuskich marek jak Saint James, Armor Lux czy Le Slip Français. W niektórych sklepach można znaleźć  rękodzieła od miejscowych wykonawców, a także tradycyjne słodycze czy inne wyroby spożywcze. W sklepach znajduje się stosunkowo niewiele typowego turystycznego kiczu, a ceny są zaskakująco dobre–takie same jak na stronach internetowych marek dostępnych w ogólnej sprzedaży. Moim zdaniem łatwiej jest nabyć dobrej jakości autentyczną francuską pamiątkę w Mont Saint Michel, niż w turystycznych miejscach w Paryżu.

• Practical tips

• Since the weather in Normandy can be unpredictable and change fast (sudden rain and strong wind), take with you waterproof and windproof jacket. Don’t forget your umbrella (also when visiting other places in Normandie and Bretagne). 
• Cars are not allowed to enter the island, and one needs to climb the abbey, so make sure you have comfortable walking shoes (choose a pair which hold during strong rain).
• Bring spacious bag which protects well your items from rain and big enough to store your extra sweater when the sun is out.
• There are shops and restaurants in the village, however the prices are elevated so if you travel on a budget, bring your own picnic. 
• Be aware of seagulls especially when carrying food in your hands. The animals can approach you to steal food from your hands and accidentally scratch you (happened to me).
• If you would like to stay on the Mont Saint Michel for a night, there are quite some hotel options. They are rather expensive for 2 and 3 star standard, however for sure spending the night in the village is an unforgettable experience.
• You can arrive from Paris to Rennes or Mont Saint Michel by fast bullet train TGV and then take a bus to the complex. However, there are only few public buses operating between Mont Saint Michel and Rennes and Sant Malo, so check the schedules well, alternatively choose organised trip from Paris.
• There are ATMs on the island and practically everywhere the credit/debit cards are accepted. Staff in the shops and restaurants speak good English.
• You can take your dog to the village (dogs are not permitted to the abbey and some shops).

• Porady praktyczne

• Pogoda w Normandii jest dynamiczna i szybko się zmienia (nagłe opady deszczu i porywisty wiatr), konieczne jest więc zabranie ze sobą przeciwdeszczowej i przeciwwiatrowej kurtki. Nie zapomnij parasola (ta sama zasada obowiązuje w całej Bretanii i Normandii). 
• Samochody nie mają prawa wjazdu na wyspę, po opactwie i otaczającej wyspie można poruszać się wyłącznie pieszo, warto więc zabrać parę wygodnych butów, najlepiej nieprzemakalnych. 
• Weź ze sobą plecak lub większą torebkę, która jest odporna na deszcz i pomieści warstwy ubrań, kiedy słońce wyjrzy zza chmur.
• W wiosce Mont Saint Michel znajduje się wiele sklepów i restauracji, jednakże ceny jedzenia są podwyższone. Jeżeli planujesz wyjazd budżetowy, weź wałówkę ze sobą. 
•  Uważaj na mewy i alki, zwłaszcza kiedy trzymasz w rękach jedzenie. Ptaki nie boją się ludzi i podlatują, żeby wyrwać żywność z ręki. Łatwo wtedy o zadrapanie (moje własne doświadczenie). 
• Mont Saint Michel dysponuje ofertą hotelową dla osób, które chciałyby zatrzymać się na noc. Miejsca te są jednak dość drogie, zwłaszcza, że ich standard to dwie i trzy gwiazdki. Z drugiej strony, noc na wyspie jest niezapomnianym doświadczeniem. 
• Aby dojechać do Mont Saint Michel transportem publicznym, należy wziąć pociąg TGV do Rennes lub Sant Malo, a następnie przesiąść się do lokalnego autobusu. Jednakże, w ciągu dnia kursuje niewielka liczba autobusów pomiędzy Mont Sant Michel i Rennes, więc lepiej dokładnie sprawdzić rozkład jazdy podczas planowania podróży. Alternatywnie, jest sporo jednodniowych wycieczek organizowanych z Paryża. 
• Na wyspie znajdują się bankomaty, w większości miejsc akceptowane są płatności kartą. Na wyspie można porozumiewać się bezproblemowo po angielsku. 
•  Psy mogą nam towarzyszyć w wiosce, nie mogą jednak być wprowadzone do klasztoru i niektórych sklepów.
