December is a month when a lot of European cities transform into shiny fairy land with its elaborate Christmas decorations. Both locals and tourists can bask in the Christmas lights, absorb scents and sounds coming from Christmas markets, enjoy special exhibitions and installations.

This year, following the difficult time in 2020, when a lot of December events were cancelled, Paris again amazes with its Christmas spirit. The glue wine tastes somehow a bit better than before, the streets so beautifully decorated are finally filled with people smiling happily when on the search for their Christmas gifts–such a nice contrast comparing to isolating times from last December. All this festive atmosphere brightening up the long dark winter days, is appreciated (at least by me) much more this year, since finally this special time can be shared together with friends and family but also with passers-by who also admire Paris this very special time of the year.

Grudzień jest miesiącem, kiedy wiele europejskich miast zamienia się w rozświetloną bajkową krainę dzięki barwnej ferii świątecznych dekoracji. Turyści i miejscowi wygrzewają się w blasku świątecznych światełek, chłoną dźwięki i zapachy z bożonarodzeniowych jarmarków, uczęszczają na tematyczne wystawy i artystyczne instalacje.

Po trudnym roku 2020, kiedy większość grudniowych atrakcji zostało odwołanych, wydaje się, że Paryż zachwyca świąteczną magią jeszcze bardziej. Grzane wino smakuje jeszcze lepiej, a pięknie ozdobione uliczki zapełnione mieszkańcami i turystami w poszukiwaniu świątecznych prezentów tworzą tak duży kontrast w porównaniu z zeszłoroczną izolacją.  Cała ta świąteczna otoczka od lat rozjaśnia mi długie zimowe wieczory, a w tym roku doceniam ją jeszcze bardziej, bo w przeciwieństwie do ubiegłego roku, mogę ten czas spędzać wśród rodziny i znajomych, ale także razem z nieznajomymi przechodniami, którzy wreszcie zapełnili ulice i tak jak ja zachwycają się magią świątecznego Paryża.

Every December, Paris is adorned with beautiful garnishments, the decorations differ every year. Many Parisians developed the traditions to visit their favourite Christmas markets or watch the dazzling exhibitions in the shop windows of Galerie Lafayette. Place Vendôme, Champs-Élysées and Avenue Montaigne stun with their lights and intricately decorated Christmas trees.

Każdego grudnia Paryż jest dekorowany niezliczonymi światełkami i girlandami, a ozdoby są inne każdego sezonu. Wielu Paryżan wyrobiło sobie tradycję odwiedzania swoich ulubionych świątecznych jarmarków, oglądania małych dzieł sztuki w postaci wystaw świątecznych w galerii Lafayette. Place Vendôme, Champs-Élysées oraz Avenue Montaigne zachwycają grą świateł i bogato zdobionymi choinkami (praktycznie co kilka metrów).

In this post, I will give you a small tour around the Christmas sweet spots of Paris. Of course this is not an exhaustive guide to all the places with beautiful decorations, it would take many days to capture all the small streets and corners with charming garlands and colorful Christmas trees. Perhaps a good way to feel the Christmas spirit is just to get lost in the maze of streets in Le Marais or Saint-Germain-des-Prés (for a start) and absorb the festive atmosphere there. Many shops and restaurants give a nice surprise with stylishly adorned windows or outdoors stands.

However, in this guide I will focus on the most iconic Parisian Christmas spots visiting of which became a yearly tradition for many locals (and tourists). The decorations and themes change every December, so it’s worth to have a stroll during every season.

If you plan to visit France before Christmas, most of decorations and markets are installed at the beginning of December.

Wiele niepozornych uliczek i zaułków zaskakuje uroczymi dekoracjami. Dobrym pomysłem na świąteczny spacer po Paryżu to zagubienie się w gąszczu ulic, małych placów i skwerów (na przykład zaczynając od dzielnic Le Marais lub Saint-Germain-des-Prés) i otworzyć się na wiele miłych niespodzianek i unoszącą się dookoła świąteczną atmosferę.

W dzisiejszym wpisie skupię się jednak na najbardziej widowiskowych świątecznych atrakcjach Paryża oraz miejscach tradycyjnie odwiedzanych w grudniu przez jego mieszkańców. Dekoracje i motyw wiodący zmieniają się każdego roku, dlatego co sezon czeka nas w Paryżu wiele miłych niespodzianek.

Christmas markets

You will find a lot of Christmas markets in Paris, they are installed in many districts of the city.They are very different, vary in size, theme and type of sold products. This season I visited 4 of them:

W Paryżu organizowanych jest każdego roku wiele jarmarków świątecznych. Różnią się one od siebie rodzajem dekoracji, sprzedawanymi produktami a także wielkością. Tego roku odwiedziłam cztery jarmarki:

• Christmas market in Hôtel de Ville

In my opinion one of the most spectacular Christmas markets in the city this year. The chalets are placed between forest of evergreen trees, and the neo-Renaissance façade of Hôtel de Ville basks in the brilliant light show with falling snowflakes. The festive atmosphere is highlighted by the subtle sounds of music. Take a stroll along the small paths between enchanting groves of firs and birch trees, listen to the music and have a look at the chalets’ offer: small snacks and artisanal products with a label Made in Paris. However, the amount of stands with artisanal products is rather small, so I would not plan to get there many Christmas gifts in case this is your plan.

There is only a few food stands, so expect long queues to grab your snack.

Access: metro Hôtel de Ville (line 1)

Jarmark świąteczny przed głównym ratuszem Paryża (Hôtel de Ville) jest jednym z najbardziej widowiskowych w tym roku. Budki ze sklepikami są ukryte wśród gąszczu jodeł i brzóz. Neorenesansowa fasada ratusza jest rozświetlona iluminacjami płatków śniegu. Wokół rozbrzmiewają delikatnie dźwięki świątecznych piosenek. Sklepiki oferują zarówno produkty gastronomiczne jak i gamę wyrobów wyprodukowanych w Paryżu (motyw tego jarmarku).

Nie planowałabym jednak tutaj większych zakupów prezentowych, liczba stoisk jest niewielka. Kolejki po grzane wino (vin chaud) także są dłuższe niż na pozostałych jarmarkach.

• Christmas Market in Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is so beautifully decorated for Christmas that the district is worth a visit on its own to feel the magical and festive atmosphere.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas market is located close to Saint-Germain-des-Prés church (Boulevard St-Germain). This is one of the best mid-sized markets with a very good (the best out of 4 markets I visited) hot mulled wine (vin chaud) and roasted chestnuts. You will find there many stands with French gastronomy products and handcrafted items.

Gets crowded in the afternoons but the queues are much smaller than in front of Hôtel de Ville.

Access: metro Saint-Germain-des-Prés (line 4)

Jarmark Saint-Germain-des-Prés to kolejne świąteczne miejsce na mapie Paryża, pięknie udekorowany, z najlepszym (subiektywna opinia) grzanym winem w porównaniu do innych jarmarków. Dodatkową zaletą jest jego lokalizacja, Saint-Germain-des-Prés jest uroczą częścią Paryża wartą odwiedzenia także poza sezonem świątecznym. Opisywany jarmark jest średnich rozmiarów, można tutaj kupić produkty gastronomiczne oraz różnorakie rękodzieła. Warto zatrzymać się tutaj na pieczone kasztany. Na jarmarku robi się dość tłoczno podczas godzin popołudniowych, ale kolejki do stoisk z przekąskami są znacznie krótsze niż przy Hôtel de Ville.

Dojazd: metro Saint-Germain-des-Prés (linia 4)

• Christmas Market in Montmartre

This is a small-sized Christmas market situated on the picturesque Place des Abbesses. This charming place concentrates approximately around 30 chalets along a brightly lighted carousel. You can have here spiced mulled wine and try French delicacies such as snails (escargots), foie gras or raclette. I had impression that this market is less touristy and filled more with locals. The chalets sell also handcrafted items (knitted scarfs, local honey, children toys, etc).

Access: metro Abbesses (line 12)

Ten niewielki jarmark mieści się przy urokliwym Place des Abbesses. Jest to najmniejszy jarmark jaki odwiedziłam, zdecydowanie mniej turystyczny. Około 30 stoisk koncentruje się wokół kolorowej karuzeli dla dzieci (i nie tylko!). Warto spróbować tutaj francuskich przysmaków: grzanego wina, ślimaków (escargots), foie gras czy raclette. Kramiki oferują ręcznie wykonane szaliki, lokalny miód, zabawki dla dzieci i wiele innych drobiazgów.

Dojazd: metro Abbesses (linia 12)

Świąteczny jarmark La Défense jest największy w Paryżu i liczy ponad 300 stoisk. Znajdziesz tutaj wiele kramów sprzedających grzane wino, ostrygi, hiszpańską paellę, czy też raclette, na pewno nikt nie wyjdzie stamtąd głodny. Wiele stoisk sprzedaje lokalne produkty z Francji jak i sąsiednich krajów; hiszpańskie szynki, francuskie sery czy też przeróżne słodycze. Jest też sporo możliwości do degustacji produktów przed zakupem (polecam sprawdzić czekoladowego szampana, pyszności!). Jeżeli poszukujesz inspiracji na świąteczne prezenty, to jarmark oferuje wiele stoisk z biżuterią, szalikami, dekoracjami do domu, galanterią skórzaną, etc.

Parisian Department Stores

Paris is famous from its stunning Christmas decorations adorning window shops of the luxurious shopping galleries, the most spectacular ones belong to Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Hausmann and BHV le Marais near Hôtel de Ville.

Paryż jest znany ze spektakularnych dekoracji witryn sklepowych luksusowych domów handlowych, najbardziej widowiskowe należą do Galeries Lafayette na Boulevard Hausmann oraz BHV le Marais blisko Hôtel de Ville.

• Galeries Lafayette

Galeries Lafayette is an upmarket French department store chain, the biggest in Europe.

Every year the windows are full of colorful displays and animated scenes featuring the products of brands you can find in this luxurious store. Some of the animations are real pieces of art, with the intricate scenography, sounds, lights and motion of figurines of the installations.

Galeries Lafayette are equally beautifully decorated inside of the store. The central place under enormous copula takes a spectacular Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling. The Christmas tree is decorated differently every year so it draws locals to admire it every season.

This year, the tree is covered in iconic toys, while Santa Claus is in full cosmonaut mode! As for the previous years, the tree goes live every thirty minutes to provide you with a marvelling light and sound show.

Don’t forget to get on terrace on the last floor to see a beautiful panorama of Paris from there.

Galeries Lafayette to luksusowy dom handlowy, sieć jest największa w Europie. Każdego roku sklepowe witryny są ozdobione ruchomymi animacjami z subtelnie wkomponowanymi produktami różnych marek. Niektóre z wystaw to małe dzieła sztuki z oryginalną scenografią, światłem, dźwiękiem i ruchem zainstalowanych figurek. Wnętrze budynku również zasługuje na uwagę, co roku w centralnym miejscu pod kopułą jest podwieszana ogromna choinka, dekorowana przez kultowe zabawki. W tym roku Santa występuje w roli kosmonauty.

Jeżeli planujesz odwiedzić galerię Lafayette, zajrzyj na taras na ostatnim piętrze budynku, rozpościera się stamtąd piękny widok na miasto.

• BHV le Marais

The BHV Marais is another upmarket store which offers various departments across its eight floors and in its smaller specialized shops nearby. This year the shop windows host Christmas decorations and animations with Swiss theme. You will find here brilliantly lighted displays featuring Swiss made products. There is also a small food chalet in front of the store, selling typical Swiss comfort food, think raclette or fondue.

Le BHV le Marais is just across the street from Hôtel de Ville Christmas market, so it’s very convenient to see both attractions at once.

BHV Marais to kolejny luksusowy dom handlowy, z ośmioma piętrami wypełnionymi sklepami prestiżowych marek. Tego roku w witrynach sklepu znajdują się animacje z motywem szwajcarskim. Wiele reputowanych marek szwajcarskich eksponuje tam swoje produkty. Blisko głównego wejścia znajduje się niewielka budka serwująca szwajcarskie przysmaki; raclette oraz fondue.

BHV Marais znajduje się bardzo blisko ratusza Hôtel de Ville, łatwo więc odwiedzić te atrakcje podczas jednej wizyty.

Paris most spectacular streets

• Avenue Champs-Élysées

Probably every visitor in Paris wants to see famous avenue Champs-Élysées, which links Triumphal Arch with Place Concorde, Jardin Tuileries and finally Louvre.

Along with Eiffel Tower, the avenue is one of symbols of Paris. It is lined with restaurants (l’Atelier Renault, Ledoyen etc.), luxury boutiques (Louis Vuitton, Mont-Blanc, Guerlain, Ferrari etc.), flagship stores (Abercrombie, Sephora etc.), cinemas and museums (the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais, the Palais de la Découverte). It is also the place where French major events such as the Bastille Day military parade, the arrival of the Tour de France and the Christmas lights are hosted every year.

This year famous avenue is decorated with beautiful red lights adorning the trees, also many restaurants and shops ornamented nicely their windows and main entrances with brilliant lights and colorful Christmas trees.

Prawdopodobnie każdy odwiedzający po raz pierwszy Paryż wybiera się na spacer po tej znanej ulicy, która łączy Łuk Triumfalny z Placem Concorde, ogrodami Tuileries oraz finalnie z Luwrem. Wraz z wieżą Eiffla jest to jedno z najbardziej kultowych miejsc w Paryżu. Wzdłuż Champs-Élysées ulokowanych jest wiele restauracji (l’Atelier Renault, Ledoyen etc.), luksusowych butików Louis Vuitton, Mont-Blanc, Guerlain, Ferrari etc.), kin oraz muzeów (Grand Palais, Petit Palais,  Palais de la Découverte). Jest to także miejsce wielu ważnych imprez  jak parada podczas Dnia Bastylii, meta Tour de France czy też świąteczne dekoracje każdego grudnia.

Tego roku Champs-Élysées udekorowane są czerwonymi światełkami rozciągniętymi wzdłuż koron drzew. Wiele sklepów i restauracji ozdobiło swoje witryny choinkami i światełkami tworząc magiczny bożonarodzeniowy klimat.

• Place Vendôme

Although not exactly a street (it’s a square but cars pass through it), Place Vendôme is definitely worth a visit for its stunning Christmas decorations (and I think one of the  largest Christmas trees concentration in Paris). The square is home to the fabulous Ritz hotel, but is also home to retail stores, famous jewellers and well-known dress designers in couture, and in the middle of the square is one of the old monuments in Paris. It is one of the symbols of style and ultimate luxury that Paris is famous of.

Every year facades of buildings along the square are beautifully decorated, the entrances to the luxurious shops are adorned with sparkling Christmas trees, and all around the square you can find stylish small elegant details enhancing festive atmosphere. Place Vendôme is an embodiment of French refinement and elegance and during Christmas its splendor shines even more brightly.

Chociaż nie jest to ulica (samochody mogą jednak przez plac przejeżdżać), paryski Place Vendôme zachwyca świąteczną atmosferą. Plac jest znany z otaczających go luksusowych marek oraz kultowego hotelu Ritz. Miejsce to jest jednym z symboli francuskiej elegancji i wyrafinowania.

Każdego grudnia jest on pięknie dekorowany subtelnie zdobionymi choinkami i światełkami, praktycznie w każdym zaułku można znaleźć tutaj gustowne świąteczne akcenty.

• Avenue Montaigne

This is another prestigious street in Paris. It is connected to the Champs-Elysées so you can combine it with watching Christmas lights in both avenues during your walk.

Avenue Montaigne is known as one of the most exclusive and luxurious arteries in the capital. The major haute-couture brands have chosen home, such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chloé, Céline, Thierry Mugler, Saint Laurent Paris, Prada or Gucci. Walking along avenue Montagne you can have a glimpse on the Eiffel Tower.

Avenue Montaigne sparkles with lights every year, the facades of the shops are decorated with Christmas style exhibitions and Christmas trees. This is one of the most stylish Christmas decorations in the entire city.

Avenue Montaigne to kolejna prestiżowa ulica Paryża. Jest połączona z Champs-Elysées , więc łatwo zobaczyć te dwa imponujące miejsca podczas jednego spaceru. Przy Avenue Montaigne mieszczą się najbardziej ekskluzywne modowe marki, takie jak Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chloé, Céline, Thierry Mugler, Saint Laurent Paris, Prada czy Gucci. Spacerując wzdłuż ulicy, widzimy wyglądającą nieśmiało zza budynków wieżę Eiffla.

Avenue Montaigne nigdy nie rozczarowuje swoimi delikatnymi subtelnymi świątecznymi światełkami i pięknie zdobionymi fasadami sklepów i hoteli.

Other places

A lot of castles and cultural sites decorate their interiors and host special Christmas events and exhibitions accessible for visitors. When in Paris during December and beginning in January, you may want to check few additional places, which adorned by Christmas lights and garnishments bustle with a magic fairy atmosphere and may look completely different than in other times of the year (which is why even if you’ve been to some place, it’s worth considering another visit).

Wiele zamków i obiektów kultury dekoruje swoje wnętrza i organizuje specjalne świąteczne wystawy. Jeżeli planujesz pobyt w Paryżu w grudniu lub na początku stycznia, możesz też rozważyć kilka dodatkowych miejsc, gdzie unosi się wyjątkowy klimat świąt. Polecane miejscówki są powszechnie znane, jednak przyozdobione w świąteczne girlandy i światełka, stają się nie do poznania.

Below I give few suggestions of such places (in Paris region):

• Christmas show in the Palace of Versailles (le parcours du roi). From the Salon d’Hercule or the Queen’s Chamber to the Hall of Mirrors lit by the royal fireworks, musicians, dancers, singers, fencers, and actors are getting ready in the Grands Apartments for an uncommon tour-show leading adults and children all the way down to the Galerie des Batailles to meet a very special guest…
• Paris Disneyland. From 13 November 2021 to 9 January 2022, the festive magic comes to life at Disneyland Paris! Sparkling decorations, Disney Characters dressed in their finest seasonal outfits and a breathtaking new parade bring magical merry moments in a picture perfect Christmas card scene.
• Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. The castle Vaux-le-Vicomte belonged to a creative and passionate mind, Nicolas Fouquet. To build his home, he enlisted the services of three of the greatest artists of the era: the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape gardener André Le Nôtre and the painter and decorator Charles Le Brun. Here, they united their genius to build a model whose majesty and balance inspired King Louis XIV at Versailles and then the whole of Europe for over a century. The castle is splendid and worth a visit every time of the year, however in December its interiors are decorated with stunning Christmas decorations. It’s easy to imagine that this is how the grand houses of noblemen were adorned centuries ago. The château will find itself arrayed in plentiful of illuminations, plunging the visitor into the magic world of fable. Courtyards, outbuildings, the château itself, and the garden à la française is transformed into a land of marvel, where lights and activities promise a moment of enchantment for the whole family, far from the activities of everyday life.
• lluminations in Parc la Vilette. This is rather modern installation with no explicit Christmas theme. However, this attraction is running in December, and this year presents electronic and delicate landscapes of Scott Gibbons. The stroll continues along the canal with the light constellations. On the surface of the water, splinters of the moon line up with elegance in a grand galactic ballet, a monumental ode to the beauty of life. This festival of lights, in Paris, city of light, highlights the poetic urban winter transition, to majestically celebrate the arrival of a new cycle. The installation is relatively small, but if you want to take a short break from Christmas themed events, this one can be quite refreshing.

Kilka sugestii miejsc wartych odwiedzenia w regionie paryskim:

• Świąteczna ścieżka w pałacu wersalskim (le parcours du roi). Poprzez salę Herkulesa, komnaty królowej aż do sali lustrzanej, pałac wersalski wypełniony jest muzykami, tancerzami, kuglarzami wśród świątecznych dekoracji. Dzieci (i dorośli) są zaproszone na ten wyjątkowy spacer po apartamentach królewskich w świątecznym wydaniu, na samym końcu czeka na wszystkich niespodzianka…
• Paryski Disneyland. Od 13 listopada do 9 stycznia, Disneyland otwiera swoje wrota w świątecznym wydaniu. Spodziewaj się bożonarodzeniowych parad, dekoracji, iluminacji oraz disneyowskich bohaterów ubranych w odświętne stroje oraz wiele innych atrakcji. 

• Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. Ten wyjątkowy pałac powstał dzięki innowacyjnemu i ciekawskiemu Nicolas Fouquet. Aby wybudować swoją siedzibę, zatrudnił on jednych z najzdolniejszych artystów ówczesnych czasów: ogrodnika André Le Nôtre, architekta Louis Le Vau, malarza i dekoratora Charles Le Brun, którzy zaprojektowali kompleks pałacowy tak wyśmienity, że wzbudził zazdrość samego Ludwika XIV. Sam pałac wart jest odwiedzin o każdej porze roku, jednak w okresie grudniowym jego wnętrze jest bogato zdobione świątecznymi dekoracjami, sprawiając, że miejsce to wydaje się jeszcze bardziej magiczne. Wiele atrakcji znajduje się także w rozległych ogrodach. Gra świateł i dźwięków świątecznych animacji połączone z urokiem starego pałacu pozwala zapomnieć na czas wizyty o problemach codzienności i przenieść się na kilka godzin w magiczny bajkowy świat.
• Iluminacje Parc la Vilette. Jest to raczej nowoczesna instalacja, nie nawiązująca bezpośrednio do tematyki świąt. Pojawia się jednak cyklicznie każdego grudnia. Iluminacje składają się z kilku części, pierwsza z nich przedstawia cyfrowe subtelne pejzaże Scotta Gibbons. Następnie przenosimy się do animacji wzdłuż kanałów wodnych rozświetlonych blaskiem kolejnych instalacji, gdzie załamane odbicie księżyca w tafli wody tworzy subtelny galaktyczny balet. Instalacja ta jest odą do uroku życia. Ten festiwal świateł (sam Paryż jest nazywany Miastem Świateł) jest poetycką interpretacją zimowej przemiany i celebracją nadchodzącego nowego cyklu.
